Those of us living in Jakarta and the bigger cities tend to overlook perspectives from the other provinces. One of the great things about the Net is that it democratizes geography. Jurnalis-ntt.blogspot.com is a blog from journalists at Pos Kupang, NTT, who modestly claim to be "anakalo faiwalu" or “Common People”. The blog is not an official Pos Kupang blog, so the journalists that contribute to it identify themselves as “Pos Kupang’s fans”.
The blog, which was started only in January this year, features some of the well written articles on current national events, local news, social commentaries and travel. “Rumpu Rampe” is a section that is worth checking out. One notable topic is a comparison between the campaigns of SBY’s “Bersama Kita Bisa” (Together we can) and similar campaign by PM Lee Kuan Yew where the authors demonstrate how diffused and abstract SBY’s campaign is compared to the focussed and results-oriented campaign by Lee.
The blog also has sharp comments about journalism and freedom of the press, especially online journalism, in Indonesia. On the “freedom of the press” section, the hottest issue today is the physical abuse of Pos Kupang journalist Yacobus “Obby” Lewanmeru. He was abused for his investigation into alleged irregularities surrounding the district elections in Manggarai.
My favorites, however, are the collection of short stories and poems taken from Pos Kupang. The blog also educates its readers about Gerson Poyk, a NTT writer who is popular abroad but still remains relatively unknown in Indonesia. His works have also been translated into English and German.
The blog provides a welcome addition to the mosaic of voices from all over the country that makes up Indonesia. Journalist from other provinces would do well to emulate their brethren from NTT.
